The Recipient of the Youth Flying Scholarship Award for 2009
The Darling Downs Sport Aircraft Association Inc. and the Lone Eagle Flying School at Clifton, have announced the recipient of the Youth Flying Scholarship Award for 2009.
Logan Norris from Toowoomba is a year 11 student at Harristown State High School and was “over the moon” with his selection from the other applicants.
Logan said “I really enjoy flying and have been interested from an early age. The freedom and exhilaration of being able to fly has always amazed me. I would love to be able to combine my passion for flying into my everyday working life. I can think of nothing better than working each day in something you love. I enjoy providing advise and guidance to new students and making them feel well. This role has stemmed from when I was a school captain at Drayton Primary School and my involvement with the Air Force Cadets in Toowoomba. I was especially impressed with the professionalism, camaraderie, atmosphere and also the friendly and caring nature of the staff and members at the Lone Eagle Flying School with club members going out of their way to make new families feel welcome and they have the same outlooks and interest as myself. Flying is more than a business. It is a hobby, a fun way to spend your leisure time.”
Logan indicated he was very supportive and appreciative of the Association as the scholarship covers his membership fees, training manuals and flying training to certificate level, which is worth about $4,500. During the assessment phases of the Scholarship Award I soon realized how really enjoyable flying could be in a Drifter recreational aircraft. I never did think that I would be the winner, as we had to demonstrate an aptitude for flying over four assessment flights and have an interview with the selection panel including a short personal presentation of why I was interested and committed to general and recreational aviation.
I intend to do as much training as possible over these coming June school holidays. Logan went on to say that he would encourage any other person to come and have a go at flying, as it is easier than you would think and you will find the Club members very helpful and supportive.
Runner up for the Youth Flying Scholarship Award was Jacob Allport from Clifton who receives four hours of flying training and club membership for twelve months worth $ 600.
Club President Clive Nielsen said the aims of the Youth Flying Scholarship Award, now in its fifth year, were important to introduce young people to the sport of recreational aviation. The Recreational Aviation Association in Australia currently promotes “Giving Young People Flight Training Support”. Our club was the stimulus for its introduction and is fostering this goal.
It offers a basis of aviation knowledge for advancement and careers in both military and general commercial aviation, assists young people to complete their flying training at minimal cost whilst encouraging young people to become active long-term members of the recreational aviation community. It is a scholarship program for young people with a genuine interest in aviation. An important principle is that recipients contribute in-kind to various ongoing club activities.
The Recipient of the Youth Flying Scholarship Award for 2008
The Darling Downs Sport Aircraft Association Inc. and the Lone Eagle Flying School at Clifton, have announced the recipient of the Youth Flying Scholarship Award for 2008.
Alana Frizzell from Allora is a year 11 student at Warwick State High School and was “over the moon” with her selection from the nineteen applicants.
Alana said “I really enjoy flying and feel that recreational aviation may be a good start for my future career. I decided to apply for this scholarship upon the encouragement of my boyfriend and my parents. I am attending school and working part time at the Allora Foodworks store. I have aspirations at being a graphic designer and to use my skills as a commercial pilot to further my design work in outback areas. Being involved as a school captain previously, my involvement as a youth group leader and public speaker has helped me in achieving this flying goal. I didn’t realise I could have started my training once I had turned 15 years and obtain my licence any time thereafter. My initial goals are to fly solo, get my certificate and then take my family for passenger rides before completing my cross country training.”
